The governments Education Ministry is considering adopting Dr Rufus Slees argument about over-indebtedness in children in a recently released report about the education system. AdvertisementDr Slee, an associate research fellow for the Centre for Social Research, has already made similar points in two books, The Over-indebtedness of children in Singapore and The Over-indebtedness of Singaporeans. One of the problems is that the median age of marriage and births are well below average in Singapore. Dr Slee said: The median age of marriage and births is 35 and 34 respectively and the national fertility rate is 1. Furthermore, the percentage of working age people has stayed low at just 68. 9 per cent, below the 77 per cent average. The reason: Many young people in Singapore work in the informal economy after graduation and do not have the labour force experience to be able to secure good jobs. They then have a difficult time supporting their families, hence a negative effect on the economy as a whole. The government wants to do something about this problem, he said, but how. The government could increase the number of university places, which might alleviate the labour issue, and also promote co-education, Dr Slee wrote in the recent report. The report refers to the argument that a university education allows people to get jobs, which in turn leads to economic growth. However, this is not necessarily the case, he said, and this is a problem because the economy is growing too slowly and there is a lack of jobs. The government is supposed to be tackling this problem, but its hard, said Dr Slee. He believes education officials need to do more work with parents to teach them about the impact that bad decisions will have on their children. This will also help more parents realise that education is good. Also, parents should also take responsibility for their children. Parents need to have regular parenting classes so they can better supervise their children. This will also help more parents realise that parenting is good.
