In a new study by the Pew Research Center, American adults are less religious today than they were in the 1980s and 90s, when religion was at the center of the culture wars. When Pew researchers asked Americans to identify their religion, in 2015, 42 percent of Americans named religion nothing in particular. By contrast, in the 1990s, religion was at the center of the culture wars, and as the Pew report notes, The 1990s were marked by a fierce debate in the media, public and in private, about issues of religion and religious faith. The 1980s also saw the rise of new religious movements like evangelical Christianity, which was more visible in the public square, and a new movement, the charismatic-oriented Pentecostal church. Pew also notes that today, Pews surveys find that a majority today say they are not affiliated with any Christian religion. By comparison, the 1980s and 1990s were also when the percentage of those saying they were affiliated with no particular religion was rising.
