Saints Conyers MP John Nicolson accused Nicola Sturgeon of ignoring the reports findings and called for an urgent public inquiry. And Labours shadow welfare secretary Sharon Hodgson said it was deeply concerning that there is no proper consideration of the overwhelming evidence. The report, by the Cross-Party Welfare and Work Committee, called in December for a radical overhaul of social security in Scotland, including a radical shake up of the benefits system. Speaking to Holyroods Finance Committee on Thursday, Mrs Sturgeon said the Scottish Government had been making changes to the welfare system for almost 100 years. But she said she had not been informed about the findings of the Committee, including the committees recommendations on work capability assessments. The government has also refused to accept the findings of the report, which also said it would support a cross-party commission to review the welfare system. The reports main conclusion was that the welfare system should be reformed and that Scotland would be among the best performing nations in the EU if it were to join. It called for a radical overhaul of the welfare system which would see many peoples basic payments withdrawn over the course of a year. It also recommended scrapping the hated Universal Credit system which has left 4. Mr Nicolson said it was incredibly disappointing that such soulless criticism of the report had not been addressed by the Scottish Government. He said: I am absolutely appalled that the government have not acknowledged the overwhelming evidence on the committees report that the welfare system in Scotland is broken. The Scottish Government should be acknowledging what most independent experts agree on in their report and doing everything in its power to address it. This report comes after the Scottish Governments refusal to accept the conclusions of a cross-party inquiry.
