Baroness Karren Brady, 52, is set to return to screens tonight as BBC One’s The Apprentice debuts a new season. The business executive joined the hit show in 2009 as Lord Alan Sugar’s new assistant, replacing Margaret Mountford.
The latter left the series but returned in series 6, 7, 8 and 9 as a guest interviewer.
Karren said Margaret gave her “the best advice” before stepping into her new role.
However, the businesswoman disregarded her advice, only to quickly regret it.
She explained: “I think the probably the best advice I got coming into this show was from Margaret.
“Margaret decided that she didn’t want to do it anymore and Ellen asked me to to fill her shoes.
“And talking about shoes, she phoned me and she said, ‘I’m telling you right now, wear trainers,’ she said, ‘You are on your feet 12 hours a day’.”
The West Ham vice-chair went on: “And of course I didn’t take her advice.
“First episode I wore heels, and at the end of my first day I remember I was laying in the bath and my feet were throbbing.
“And I quickly took Margaret’s advice and wore the trainers.
“So I’ve learned I can’t stand on my feet for more than 12 hours a day without wearing trainers.”
Karren also spoke out on the importance of The Apprentice and how the programme has changed lives.
She went on: “It’s been a real honour and a privilege to be part of such a fantastic show that really, unlike any other, changes people’s lives.
“And we’ve seen some incredible things and incredible places, met some incredible people.
“And there’s also other businesses in the background that help us with innovation, design… People that put on the locations…
“It’s wonderful to be part of it. So, as I said, been a real honour and a privilege.”
Karren recently teased fans with what they can expect when The Apprentice returns to screens tonight.
She told This Morning on Tuesday: “I can tell you it goes from bad to worse wait till you see this opening episode.
“The Apprentice is back with a bang I can tell you.”
She continued: “Well the opening episode really starts with a bang as Alan sends the candidates off on a cruise ship to brand a cruise experience.
“And, as you see, I’m following the boys team and I have to say it’s an incredible episode, it really is back to its best.”
The Apprentice returns tonight at 9pm on BBC One.
