Strictly Come Dancing 2021 star John Whaite has revealed his pre-show ritual, as the BBC ballroom and Latin dancing competition hots up. The TV chef told fans that he and his partner Johannes Radebe like to sit in silence before Saturday night’s live show and “internalise all the emotions”.
The 32-year-old admitted that the pair are a bit “withdrawn” from the other contestants as they want to “focus on each other”.
They also block out the noise from their cheering in order to concentrate on the dance floor.
John opened up during a Q&A session on Instagram earlier this week.
The former Great British Bake Off champion went on to reveal the unlikely meal that he likes to eat before his performance.
“Do you and Johannes have any pre show rituals before every live show?” an Instagram user asked John.
“We sit in absolute silence, talk to nobody and eat jelly beans and coke. Then run through the dance once,” he revealed.
The Strictly star continued: “When we walk onto the dance floor and everyone shouts and cheers, we block all the noise out and focus on each other.
“It seems a bit withdrawn but it’s just about internalising all the emotions so it can come out in the dance,” he explained.
John was also asked about his friendship with the 34-year-old South African dancer.
“You and Johannes click so well on the dance floor. Why do you think that is?” a social media user questioned.
“Our friendship is based on trust and respect,” the Packed Lunch star wrote, in view of his 188,000 followers.
“We respect each other’s space, backgrounds, childhoods, previous pain.
“We respect that we are both unique and have different and beautiful things to bring to our friendship.

Tonight, the pair will perform an energetic Charleston to Milord by Édith Piaf.
John said it was “a tricky little number” when he gave a mid-week training update on the picture-sharing site.
He said of the dance: “[It has] tempo changes, tricks, spins and leaps, but I can’t help but smile the cheesiest, jolliest smile when we dance it together.”
Last week the pair found themselves in the middle of the leaderboard following their American Smooth Foxtrot.
It came one week after wowing the judges and viewers at home with their Movie Week routine.
John and Johannes scored an unprecedented three 10s in week three, following their Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired Paso Doble.
They no doubt hope to regain the top spot once again after performing the fan favourite Charleston tonight.
Strictly Come Dancing continues tonight on BBC One at 7.15pm.
