Mary Berry had ‘one of most frightening moments of her life’ due to Strictly

Mary Berry on ‘frightening’ Strictly experience

Mary Berry has said that appearing on Strictly Come Dancing was the most “frightening” experience of her life.

The 88-year-old made a cameo appearance back in 2013 to the surprise of viewers in a routine that saw her jump out of a huge cake, but it was far from being a sweet moment for the star baker.

Appearing on Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 show on Tuesday morning Mary recalled the “terrifying” appearance.

“I do remember you jumped out of a cake on Strictly,” said host Zoe. “I did,” Mary replied. “I was terrified and it was a very small space in that.

“I had to have one of the runners in with me push me when I was to jump out and it was one of the most frightening moments of my life.”

“That’s enough of Strictly for Mary,” quipped a joking Zoe. “That’s enough!” replied Mary.

The classic moment 10 years ago saw professional dancers whisk their way across the dance floor and pose next to a three-tiered cake.

And who else could possibly have popped out of the top other than Queen of Baking Mary, who lived up to her surname in a jolly cherry red dress as confetti fluttered down.

Mary, who was all smiles and didn’t give a hint of discomfort or fear, is a huge fan of the show, but has always ruled out appearing as a contestant saying she only likes showing off “at things I am good at”.

Bar Bake Off, she has also ruled out other reality shows, despite being popular with the public.

In a recent interview with OK! Magazine, she was asked whether her mind may have changed now that Angela Rippon who at 79, has joined the competition and is Strictly’s oldest contestant.

“I have not got Angela Rippon’s legs,” she said. “There’s absolutely no chance I’ll do Strictly. I’m not tempted in any way, ever.”

Mary is currently on our screens as she stars in her new BBC Two show, Mary Makes It Easy. The six episode series sees her help the likes of AJ Odudu and Anton Du Beke to sort out their culinary skills.

The first showed her setting off into the world of camping with her old friend and former Bake Off colleague Mel Giedroyc.

Mel, 55, is an avid camper and wanted to know how to cook more campfire recipes that would thrill her two grown-up daughters, Vita and Florence.

Mary Makes It Easy airs Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC Two.
