Melanie Lynskey Quit Reddit After Reading Some Seriously Problematic 'Yellowjackets' Fan Theories

There are plenty of mysteries to unpack in Yellowjackets, but none of them have anything to do with Melanie Lynskey’s body. That should obviously go without saying, but, unfortunately, here we are, in 2022, having to say it.

The actress, who plays the adult version of Shauna in Showtime’s hit drama about the lengths the members of a girls’ soccer team have to go to in order to survive after a tragic plane crash, is talented and gorgeous, but apparently some viewers got hung up on some very body shame-y fan theories about her character’s romance with hot young artist Adam (played by Peter Gadiot). Specifically, there’s a subset of fans who don’t seem to believe the conventionally-attractive male character could have genuine romantic/sexual interest in Melanie’s character. Eye. Roll.

“I’m just like, ‘Wow, really? That’s where people’s heads are at, that the most important thing is being thin or young?'” she said of the theories in an interview with Rolling Stone last month.

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Melanie revealed that falling down the rabbit hole of reading these kinds of theories actually prompted her to quit Reddit completely.

“I was looking on Reddit and reading stuff. And, I just can’t. It makes me crazy,” she explained. “There’s a lot of people saying a lot of stuff and so I was like, ‘You know what? I’m going to put that down.’ It’s like an alcoholic hitting rock bottom. But, you know, I was reading all these [comments] like, ‘Who is he?’ And I was like, ‘Wow, it’s so funny to me that nobody’s really thinking he could just be a thing. That he could just be into her.'”

Now, Adam’s character *does* seem highly sus at times (and Melanie fully acknowledges that fact), but linking his shadiness and Shauna/Melanie’s body definitely highlights how far we have to go when it comes to size representation and acceptance in the media.

“Like, on a feminist level, it was interesting to me,” she added of reading theories that questioned Adam’s attraction to Shauna. “And I understand his character is suspicious. There’s a lot of suspicious stuff about him. He seems shady. But I was having a lot of different reactions to it.”

Thankfully, not all of Melanie’s experiences with Yellowjackets fans online have been negative though. She told ET that even though it’s “scary and crazy,” she plans to “keep engaged” on Twitter, where she’s been able to connect with fans who deeply appreciate seeing her (and her body, tyvm) on their screens.

“I really appreciate people reaching out to me. I’ve gotten so many messages from women who feel very represented and seen by things they’ve seen or just by seeing my body onscreen,” she said. “And that’s so beautiful. I wish I could reply to everybody.”

So take a moment bookmark this in your ever-growing “Reasons to Love Melanie Lynskey” folder and with that, this meeting of the Melanie Lynskey Appreciation Society is now adjourned.
