Oscars 2023: Paul Mescal and Rihanna lead nominations at this years awards

The nominations for the 2023 Academy Awards were announced earlier today by Allison Williams (M3GAN) and Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal).

A24's Everything Everywhere All at Once, directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, topped the list with an whopping 11 nominations, including for Best Picture, Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), and Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu).

This was closely followed by the German war epic All Quiet on the Western Front and Martin McDonagh's tragicomedy The Banshees of Inisherin, both of which have received a total of nine nominations including for Best Picture.

And the success of Mcdonagh's popular film is just one part of a record-breaking year at the Oscars for the country of Ireland, with Banshees easily beating the record held by last year's Belfast, which received a total of seven nominations.

Actors Colin Farrell and Paul Mescal have both received nominations in the Best Actor category, for Banshees and Aftersun respectively. While Banshees has also seen success in both Supporting Actor (Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan) and Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon).

And Colm Bairéad's Irish-language drama The Quiet Girl is the first Irish nominee ever in the international film category.

Actor Brendan Fraser has continued his successful and long-awaited comeback, with an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role in The Whale.

Sequels and franchises had also seen something of a surprise success at this year's awards, with Top Gun: Maverick in with a chance of being awarded the coveted Best Film award and the Marvel Cinematic Universe seeing it's first nomination for an actor with Angela Basset receiving one for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Singer turn fashion mogul Rihanna has received her first Oscar nom for Best Original Song, for her hit song "Lift Me Up" from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Lady Gaga has also receieved a nomination in the same category for "Hold My Hand" from Top Gun: Maverick, which is the star's fourth Oscar nomination, and her third for Best Original Song.

The 95th Academy Awards will air Sunday, March 12, at 8 p.m. Eastern time and 1 a.m. for UK viewers. The nominees are as followed:
