Tyler Perry broke down and was twice forced to compose himself as he discussed his late mother Maxine and her lifetime of ‘pain’ on The View – reducing host Sara Haines to tears.
The 54-year-old got choked up after Sara, 46, praised his new documentary, Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story, and told him it made her feel like she had met his mother, who died, aged 64, in 2009.
‘This film, I will watch every time I need my own power because I wanted to run laps! It was so well done,’ she said.
‘When I met Maxine through all of it, I didn’t know her, but it shows just how much you endured as a child…’
Her words clearly hit a nerve with Tyler who took a deep breath before his voice started to break: ‘Okay wait a minute, that one took me.
‘Wow, how did it hit me that hard? You met my mother? You met my mother through it man, wow, thank you, oh my gosh.’
Joy Behar, 81, who was on hand to console him, said: ‘It still gets you, these things don’t go away so fast.’

Sara Haines made Tyler emotional when she said she felt like she ‘met’ his mom Maxine after watching his new documentary
Tyler, pictured here with his mom Maxine in 2006, described her as a woman ‘who lived her entire life with so much pain’
‘To say that you met her through that, that takes me somewhere because she… this woman endured so much pain and she didn’t have some legacy, but she had me and to say that I was able to introduce her to you, you got me there,’ Tyler said. ‘I’m sorry, Lord have mercy. I appreciate that.’
With tears in her own eyes, mother-of-three Sara replied: ‘Thank you for sharing her too, with all of us because her legacy remains very strong in you and your son.’
The TV star then attempted to discuss Tyler’s ‘violent childhood’, but he was still overcome by her kind words, adding: ‘I’m sorry, guys. I’m sorry. You met my mother through the doc… you really got me there, I’m sorry, I need to get myself together!’
Sara reassured him: ‘If you want to stay with that, you can. I understand.’
Tyler went on to detail the hardships his mother endured, as he praised her ability to strive to ensure the happiness of her loved ones.
‘I just imagine a woman who lived her entire life with so much pain and she was always worried about everybody else,’ he said. ‘I watched her get sick, I watched her get cancer, I watched her have all of these things because her intention was, “are you happy? Are you okay?”
‘She never put herself on the list and she never thought she was important and she never thought anybody would care. So to say this documentary about my life introduces her to the world, that moves me because she was very much that special to me.’
Alyssa Farah Griffin, 34, asked Tyler about his relationship with his father, with whom he is estranged.
‘You see the pain he caused your family and I can’t imagine how challenging that was for you, but despite everything you went through, you still take care of him and you make sure he’s provided for,’ she said. ‘How are you able to do that and why was it important for you?’

The View’s Sunny Hostin consoled Tyler as he attempted to explain why he was so upset
Tyler revealed that his mother Maxine ‘never thought she was important’ and ‘always worried about everybody else’
Tyler replied: ‘I’ve given up the hope of him ever doing anything good or having any kind of kindness or love in his heart. I’ve given that up because he is who he is and so you have to get to a place where you accept people for who they are.
‘I’ve accepted him for who he is and he has had a tremendous amount of pain in his own life and he didn’t know how to transfer it. He was brought to a 14-year-old to raise and she beat the hell out of him, so that’s he’s what he did to his kids.’
He said he was determined to ‘break the cycle’ with his own son, Aman, who he welcomed with Gelila Bekele in 2014, and said he isn’t ‘angry’ at his father because his ‘horrific’ actions have ‘made [him] a better man and a better person.’
Whoopi Goldberg, 67, said: ‘That’s the beauty of moms because our mothers do everything they can do to make sure that we don’t have to follow their path.
‘But they also leave that spark in us, which is why you’re able to pass the spark, which is why people are able to see who she was through you because that’s what she left in you, it’s an amazing thing. We are blessed with our mothers, if we’re lucky.’
Tyler handed over creative control to Gelila and Armani Ortiz for the documentary, which was shot over a ten year period. It chronicles the multi-hyphenate’s early years in New Orleans – marked by poverty and his abusive father – and ascension to billionaire media mogul.
Tyler, who started out as a playwright, became the first black person to own and run a major film studio in 2019, when he bought a 330-acre studio in Atlanta. He has also signed major deals with streaming giants Amazon and Netflix.
Viewers were affected by his emotional interview, with some claiming they too had been reduced to tears.
‘Tyler Perry mannnn you got me crying #TheView so touching.’

A third added: ‘I didn’t expect to turn on #TheView for a hot minute and be turned into a puddle of tears. Tyler Perry is that guy.’
