Tragic comedy icon Matthew Perry\u2019s friends and TV co-stars have been \u201cdevastated \u2013 but not surprised\u201d that drugs were found in his body, a long-time Hollywood associate said last night.<\/p>\n
The senior source added, however: \u201cEveryone who knew him well shares the belief that his official cause of death can never detract from the love he showed countless other addicts who recovered because of his help.<\/p>\n
\u201cMatty battled addiction almost his entire adult life, yo-yoing in and out of rehab.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut he never let his own suffering stop him giving his time and support to strangers in AA, often welcoming them into his own home when they were at their lowest.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou couldn\u2019t help but love him and the way he went into battle for others despite his own problems. Those who were close and devastated but, sad to say, not surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n
Read more: Matthew Perry had near-death experience taking ketamine before it caused death<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n A toxicology report revealed on Friday that Perry \u2013 whose body was found in the backyard hot tub at his mansion in LA\u2019s Pacific Palisades on October 28 \u2013 died at the age of 54 from the \u201cacute effects of ketamine\u201d and drowning.<\/p>\n Traces of buprenorphine, a drug used to treat opioid addiction, were also in his system.<\/p>\n Ketamine was developed in the 1960s as a human and animal anaesthetic but today is prescribed as a treatment for severe depression as well as being used recreationally as a psychedelic party drug.<\/p>\n Ironically, the actor said the powerful drug \u201cmade me think I was dying\u201d when he was first given infusions of it in a Swiss rehab clinic around the start of the pandemic.<\/p>\n Don’t miss… <\/strong> <\/p>\n In his book Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, published last year, he wrote: \u201cTaking K is like being hit over the head with a giant happy shovel.<\/p>\n \u201cBut the hangover was rough and outweighed the shovel.\u201d Later, however, he felt ketamine helped with his pain and depression.<\/p>\n Last week, the Canadian-born actor\u2019s Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston \u2013 who tearfully joined fellow castmates at Perry\u2019s funeral at LA\u2019s famous Forest Lawn Memorial Park on November 3 \u2013 described him as \u201chappy\u201d and \u201chealthy\u201d in his final days.<\/p>\n She told Variety magazine: \u201cI was literally texting with him that morning \u2013 funny Matty. He was not in pain. He wasn\u2019t struggling. He was happy.\u201d She added: \u201cHe was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. He really was dealt a tough one.\u201d<\/p>\n
